401(k) On-line Security

1/09/2007

Recently, there was an article in the press about the theft of 401(k) funds from an unsuspecting 401(k) participant at another company. In brief, the 401(k) funds were stolen when the participant's user sign-on and password were compromised by the thief. You can take some common sense steps to protect your account.

Secure Your Home Computer

Make sure you update your operating system software regularly and you run the latest versions of an anti-virus and anti-spyware software. Make sure you use a firewall and use caution with wireless connections.

Minimize Your Risks On-line

Do not give out your password to anyone including family members. Create a password that includes both random letters and numbers. Don't use easily identified words as your password. Change your password regularly. Protect yourself against "phishing" scams and email. Never open unsolicited emails. Never email your personal or financial data.

Protect Against Identity Theft

Use a customer number instead of your Social Security Number for your user signon. Shred documents that have your personal information. Monitor your financial statements regularly and promptly report any suspected discrepancies.

Fidelity Investments also offers a Customer Protection Guarantee.
