Start a fitness program and receive a $50 rebate

As life-changing events go, starting an exercise program can be surprisingly easy and enjoyable.

Consult your Physician: Everyone should get a complete physical before starting an exercise program, but it’s critical if you: Smoke; Are over 40; Have high (or unknown) blood pressure; Have a history of heart disease or related symptoms (chest discomfort, unreasonable breathlessness, dizziness); Are diabetic; Are 20 or more pounds overweight.

Be Patient: Even the pros started by lifting light weights, fumbling moves in aerobics class and running out of steam after a quarter-mile. Don’t worry about impressing others with your expertise; impress yourself with your commitment.

Set Realistic Goals: Don’t frustrate yourself by over-scheduling workouts, and don’t expect supermodel looks in six weeks. Improvements may be small and slow at first. Remember that exercise’s #1 benefit – a longer, healthier life – cannot be viewed in the mirror.

Do a little everyday: Regular, light-to-moderate exercise offers benefits even in small doses: Take the stairs instead of the elevator; Walk after lunch; Clean house at a fast pace; Walk or Bicycle for nearby errands; For a short hike on longer errands, exit the bus or train a stop early.

Use the Buddy System: You’ll be more motivated and have more fun if you exercise with a friend.
