United Healthcare Updates Prescription Drug List

United Healthcare (UHC) has updated the Prescription Drug List (PDL) effective May 1, 2005. Highlights of the changes include:

Clarinex (all strengths and formulations) will no longer be covered. Clarinex is a non-sedating antihistamine used to treat seasonal outdoor allergies. Two non-sedating antihistamines are available for purchase over-the-counter (non-prescription). The brand names are Claritin and Alavert. In addition, Zyrtec and Allegra (a non-sedating antihistamine) will remain on the PDL.

Prevacid (15 mg and 30 mg capsules only) will no longer be covered. Prevacid is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat heartburn and other stomach conditions. Prilosec OTC is an alternative proton pump inhibitor that is available over-the-counter (non-prescription). Prevacid oral suspension packets and fast dissolving tablets will remain covered at the Tier 3 level. Other proton pump inhibitors used to treat heartburn that remain covered on the PDL include: Aciphex, Nexium, and Protonix Delayed Release Tablets.

UHC has sent letters to patients currently taking Clainex and Prevacid outlining your options. Only you and your physician can decide what medications are best for you. If you have any questions about these medications, you should contact your physician.

New Tier 2 Drugs

United Healthcare also has moved the following medications from Tier 3 to Tier 2 effective May 1, 2005.

	Novolon insulin (pens and cartridges)
	Novolog insulin (pens and cartridges)
	Allegra (non-sedating antihistamine)
	Zaditor (eye drops to treat allergies)
	Geodon (antipsychotic)
