If I should die in an aircraft accident will my life insurance and AD&D policies pay my beneficiaries?

We get this question from employees all the time. The following chart shows if the coverage will pay in the event of aircraft accident death the coverage for each type flying activity that are common with ABX Air employees:

Situation Life AD&D Universal Life Voluntary Accident Business Travel  [2]

ABX Crewmember (you are flying the airplane)

Yes Yes Yes No [1] No [1]
Jumpseat travel on ABX Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Jumpseat travel on Part 121 Carrier Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes

Airline Passenger Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Freight Airline Passenger Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Freight Feeder Passenger Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Private Airplane Crewmember (you are flying the airplane) Yes No Yes No No

As you can see, both life insurance programs will pay benefits regardless of the cause of death.

The company paid accident insurance program will cover many aviation accident situations except when you’re piloting a non ABX Air aircraft. The voluntary accident coverage will not cover you when you are piloting any aircraft.

Other aviation activities such as crop dusting, sport flying, aerobatics flying and jumping out of perfectly good airplanes are not covered.

[1] Designated non-union ABX Flight Management personnel are covered while flying ABX Air aircraft on company business under the Voluntary Accident Plan.

[2] Business Travel Accident insurance is not available to employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Coverage is enforce only while traveling on company approved business.
