Salary Continuation Policy

Overview

ABX Air expects our exempt employees to willingly work extra hours and pick up extra responsibilities to provide the best quality service to our customers. This additional work is done without additional compensation. For this reason, the company may offer salary continuation to exempt employees who are in good standing, to supplement short-term disability benefits.

Core Requirements

Salary continuation may be granted to exempt employees during a period of disability if all available sick time has been used. Salary continuation is a privilege and not entitlement.

Eligibility

bulletEmployees who have one year of continuous full-time service as an exempt employee and who are not covered under a collective bargaining agreement.
bulletEmployees who are disabled due to their own serious health condition and who are receiving short-term disability (STD) compensation.
bulletEmployees receiving or claiming Workers’ Compensation benefits are not eligible for salary continuation.

Policy Provisions & Procedures

bulletSalary continuation supplements short-term disability (STD).
bulletSalary continuation will not supplement any other company-provided benefit.
bulletBefore salary continuation can be granted, the employee must exhaust all available sick time.
bulletOn the 15th day of disability, STD provides 50 percent of an employee’s salary for 26 weeks from the date of disability. Normally, the STD benefit equals 50 percent of weekly base pay and salary continuation would provide the other 50 percent of pay.
bulletUnder no circumstance will the combined STD benefit and salary continuation amount exceed 100 percent of the employee’s normal base pay.
bulletIf the employee declined to elect STD benefits, salary continuation will be paid as if the employee had elected the benefit.
bulletIf an employee is offered an alternate duty assignment and declines to accept the assignment, salary continuation will not be granted.
bulletAn employee is not eligible to receive more than 26 weeks of salary continuation in a rolling 12-month year. Any salary continuation used in the previous rolling 12 months will reduce the amount of salary continuation available for a new leave of absence.
bulletAfter the employee has used all allowable weeks of salary continuation, no further salary continuation will be granted until the employee returns to work and completes one full year of continuous service.
bulletSalary continuation is approved by the appropriate leave coordinator based upon the provisions of this policy.

Employee Responsibility

bulletAdvise supervisor of need for a medical leave of absence as far in advance as possible.
bulletComplete all steps necessary for a short-term disability claim.

Leadership Responsibility

bulletNotify the appropriate leave coordinator if an employee will have a need for salary continuation.
